Caution: Spoiler alert!
If you’ve been cruising the Twitter feed this morning, you may have come across an interesting update from Armando Iannucci, creator of the HBO hit series, “Veep.”
Season 4 of “Veep” is set to air in 2015. Hugh Laurie joined the cast this year in a role that has yet to be revealed. Back in November, TVLine speculated that Laurie’s character will be the new “veep” to Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The HBO promo doesn’t offer any answers on that point, just a mere few seconds of Laurie by himself and the general cast. He appears perky and maybe even personable, which is a welcome contrast to his time as Dr. Gregory House.
Don’t get me wrong: “House, MD” was a brilliant show, but it’s better to see actors taking on different projects rather than being caught in the dreaded trend of typecasting. Hugh Laurie made his start in comedy decades ago with the likes of Stephen Fry (“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”) and Emma Thompson (“The Legend of Barney Thomson”). In that regard, he’ll be a great addition to the “Veep” cast because he is very unpredictable and versatile when it comes to his comedic work.
In the interim, you have a bit of time to catch up on previous episodes of “Veep” before the season 4 premiere. You can also view episodes of an earlier Iannucci project, “The Thick of It,” for free on Hulu. A spin-off film, “In the Loop,” is available for streaming on Netflix.
