As summer draws to a close, many of us are looking ahead to the fall line-up on TV. One new sitcom is “The Crazy Ones”, premiering on CBS one month from today. It marks the return of comedian Robin Williams (The Butler, Night at the Museum) as Simon Roberts, the head of an advertising agency. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ringer) plays the role of Sydney Roberts, Simon’s daughter and partner at Roberts & Roberts. James Wolk (Mad Men), Amanda Setton (Gossip Girl), and Hamish Linklater (Battleship) also star in the program as staff members of the company.
CBS has a video on its website with remarks by the cast and creators to promote the series. It also features scenes from the pilot episode, in which the firm faces the threat of being fired by its biggest client, McDonald’s. As Simon points out, “It looks like someone had an Unhappy Meal.” He buys some time on the project, looking to seal a deal with superstar Kelly Clarkson to finish the McDonald’s commercial.
The show is a great vehicle for Williams’ high energy antics and sense of humor, perfectly captured in the sexy McDonald’s song that Simon and Zach (James Wolk) pitch to Clarkson. It comes complete with beat boxing and loaded lyrics like “secret sauce” and “Drop, drop your lovin’”. If I’ve piqued your curiosity, take a look at the video to find out the other lyrics in the song. Leave it to the unpredictable world of advertising to keep everyone on their toes, waiting to see what crazy things will happen next.
Of course, the sitcom is not just about Robin Williams. There’s still the other formidable half of Roberts & Roberts. From the snippets we’ve seen of the pilot, Sarah Michelle Gellar holds her own against the veteran actor. Sydney Roberts comes across as serious and focused compared to her father, bringing a welcome balance to the partnership. It will be interesting to see how the father-daughter relationship plays out through the run of the series.
On another note, just who are the crazy ones exactly? The clients, difficult child actors, superstars, or the advertising associates themselves? Maybe everyone in the entertainment business is a bit mad, but perhaps this sitcom shows us how it’s possible to have fun along the way.
The Crazy Ones premieres on September 26 at 9:30/8:30c on CBS.
